Gun Milan by Name
Ancient Vedic compatibility analysis using names to determine astrological harmony.
What Is Gun Milan? The Ashtakoot System Explained
Gun Milan — also written as Guna Milan or Kundali Matching — is the most widely used system of marriage compatibility assessment in Vedic astrology. The word 'gun' means quality or virtue, and 'milan' means meeting or union. The system scores compatibility across eight categories (ashtakoot) with a maximum possible score of 36 points.
Traditionally, this analysis uses the birth charts of the prospective bride and groom, specifically comparing their moon signs and birth nakshatras. Our calculator estimates the nakshatra from the name's vibratory signature — a valid approach in the absence of exact birth details, rooted in the Vedic understanding that a person's name carries the resonance of their birth stars.
A score of 18 or above is generally considered the minimum acceptable threshold for marriage. 24 and above is considered good; 30 and above is exceptional and relatively rare.
The Eight Kutas: A Deep Dive
1. Varna (1 point) — वर्ण
Varna assesses the spiritual and psychological compatibility based on caste or work archetype. The four varnas — Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra — represent four fundamental psychological orientations. For full marks, the groom's varna should be equal to or higher than the bride's.
2. Vashya (2 points) — वश्य
Vashya measures the natural magnetism and mutual influence between the two people — how easily they can inspire, guide, and be led by each other. A high Vashya score indicates the couple will naturally look to each other for guidance.
3. Tara (3 points) — तारा
Tara (also called Dina) assesses health, wellbeing, and longevity of the relationship by comparing birth stars. It is calculated by counting nakshatras from the bride's to the groom's and dividing by 9. Certain remainder values are auspicious.
4. Yoni (4 points) — योनि
Yoni examines physical and intimate compatibility by assigning each nakshatra an animal symbol. Compatible animal pairs receive full marks; hostile pairs receive zero. Yoni compatibility directly influences physical harmony and capacity for sustained intimacy.
5. Graha Maitri (5 points) — ग्रह मैत्री
Graha Maitri assesses intellectual and psychological compatibility by comparing the ruling planets of the moon signs. If the two ruling planets are friends in classical Jyotish, the couple will think alike, communicate naturally, and support each other's growth.
6. Gana (6 points) — गण
Gana classifies each nakshatra into one of three temperamental categories: Deva (divine — gentle, spiritual), Manushya (human — balanced, practical), and Rakshasa (intense, passionate, strong-willed). Full marks are awarded when both partners share the same Gana.
7. Bhakoot (7 points) — भकूट
Bhakoot examines the impact of the union on emotional wellbeing, financial prosperity, and progeny by comparing moon sign positions. Certain moon sign combinations (6/8, 9/5, 12/2) are considered inauspicious and receive significant attention from experienced astrologers.
8. Nadi (8 points) — नाड़ी
Nadi is the most heavily weighted kuta — and arguably the most important. It assesses genetic and health compatibility by classifying each nakshatra into one of three nadis: Adi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta), and Antya (Kapha). For an auspicious match, the two individuals must have different nadis. If both share the same nadi, it is called Nadi Dosha.
Gun Milan by Name vs. Traditional Kundali Matching
Traditional Kundali matching requires exact birth details — date, time, and place of birth — to accurately determine the moon sign and nakshatra. Our name-based approach derives a nakshatra index from the vibratory value of the name, which provides a meaningful estimate when birth details are unavailable.
This method is grounded in the Vedic understanding that a person's birth name — given at the naming ceremony (namakarana) — is ideally chosen to resonate with the nakshatra of birth. When the name has been thoughtfully chosen, its resonance approximates the natal nakshatra closely enough to provide useful guidance.
For decisions as significant as marriage, we recommend using this tool as a first-pass assessment, then consulting a qualified Jyotishi with both individuals' complete birth details for a thorough Kundali Milan analysis.
