The 30 Tithis — Names & Significance
A tithi is one thirtieth of the lunar month — the time the Moon takes to move 12° ahead of the Sun. Each lunar month has 15 tithis in the waxing Shukla Paksha and 15 in the waning Krishna Paksha; the names repeat, with the fifteenth being Purnima (full moon) in Shukla and Amavasya (new moon) in Krishna. Every tithi has a presiding deity and belongs to one of five natures that guide which activities suit the day.
