Mangal Dosha: What It Is, Who Has It & Remedies

Mangal Dosha (also called Kuja Dosha, Bhom Dosha, or simply 'Manglik') is one of the most widely discussed afflictions in Vedic astrology, particularly in the context of marriage. It occurs when Mars (Mangal) is placed in specific houses of the Kundali — traditionally the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th houses — counted from the Ascendant (Lagna), the Moon, or sometimes Venus.

Mars is a fiery, aggressive, and energetic planet. In the context of marriage (governed primarily by the 7th house), a powerful Mars can bring intensity, conflict, and in extreme cases, disruption to partnership. It is this potential that Mangal Dosha seeks to identify and address.

The primary positions creating Mangal Dosha:

<strong>1st House (Lagna):</strong> Mars here affects the self and can bring aggressive personality traits into the marriage. <strong>2nd House:</strong> Governs family and speech — Mars here may cause difficulties with family or harsh communication. <strong>4th House:</strong> Governs home and happiness — Mars here may create domestic conflicts. <strong>7th House:</strong> Directly governs marriage and partnerships — considered the strongest Mangal Dosha position. <strong>8th House:</strong> Governs longevity and inheritance — traditionally the most feared position for Mars in the marriage context. <strong>12th House:</strong> Governs bedroom matters and expenses — Mars here can affect marital intimacy.

Some astrologers include only the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, and 12th houses (five-house system), while others include the 2nd house (six-house system). The interpretation varies by tradition and region.

Mangal Dosha is not absolute. A significant number of Dosha-cancellation (Bhanga) rules exist:

Because of these many cancellations, a blanket fear of Mangal Dosha is unwarranted. Always consult a qualified Jyotishi for an accurate assessment.

For those with active Mangal Dosha, the following remedies are traditionally recommended:

<strong>Kumbh Vivah</strong> — A symbolic marriage to a banana tree, peepal tree, or silver/gold idol of Vishnu before the actual wedding. This is considered to absorb the Dosha's effects. <strong>Mangal puja on Tuesdays</strong> — Worshipping Lord Hanuman or Lord Bhairava (forms of Mars energy) every Tuesday. <strong>Chanting Mangal Mantra</strong> — "Om Angarakaya Namah" or the Gayatri Mantra for Mars. <strong>Offering red lentils (masoor dal)</strong> to the poor on Tuesdays. <strong>Wearing a coral (moonga) gemstone</strong> — in a gold ring on the ring finger, after consultation with a Jyotishi. <strong>Hanuman Chalisa recitation</strong> — daily, particularly on Tuesdays, is widely considered the most accessible and effective remedy.
