What is Devutthana Ekadashi?

It is the Shukla Ekadashi of Kartika, when Vishnu wakes from the four-month Chaturmas sleep that began on Devshayani Ekadashi. It is also called Dev Uthani or Prabodhini Ekadashi.

Why do weddings resume after this day?

Auspicious works — weddings, housewarmings, sacred-thread ceremonies — are paused through Chaturmas while Vishnu sleeps. When he wakes on Devutthana Ekadashi, the marriage season opens; Tulsi Vivah is its first ceremony.

What is Tulsi Vivah?

The ceremonial marriage of the tulsi plant to Shaligram (Vishnu), begun from Devutthana Ekadashi. It re-enacts Vishnu's vow to wed Vrinda-turned-tulsi each year, and is held as the most auspicious wedding of the season.
