When is Hartalika Teej celebrated?
On the Tritiya of the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada, in late monsoon — the third day of the bright fortnight, a day before Ganesh Chaturthi. For this year's date, see the date shown above.
Is the Hartalika Teej fast really without water?
Traditionally yes — it is a nirjala vrat kept without food or water for a full day and night, including a night vigil. Those unable to keep it fully may take fruit or water, but the classical observance is waterless.
Who worships on Hartalika Teej?
Married women keep it for the long life and wellbeing of their husbands, and unmarried women for a good husband. The worship is of Parvati and Shiva together, made in clay by the women themselves.
How is Hartalika Teej different from Hariyali Teej?
Hariyali Teej falls in Shravana and is a lighter, celebratory festival of swings and mehndi. Hartalika Teej falls a month later in Bhadrapada and centres on the severe nirjala fast and the katha of Parvati's penance.
