Sharad Navratri 2023
The great autumn Navratri — nine nights of Durga from Ghatasthapana on Ashvin Shukla Pratipada, culminating in Dussehra.
Ghatasthapana: Sunday, 15 October 2023 · 9 nights
The meaning of Sharad Navratri
Sharad Navratri is the largest of the year's four Navratris. It marks the goddess's nine-night battle with Mahishasura, won at dawn on the tenth — Vijayadashami, the day of victory. In the east these same days are Durga Puja; on the tenth Rama's victory over Ravana is burned in effigy across the north.
Each night is given to one of the nine forms of Durga, worshipped in order from Shailaputri to Siddhidatri. Barley sown at Ghatasthapana sprouts through the nine days, and Ashtami–Navami carry the kanya pujan, where young girls are fed and honoured as the living goddess.
The nine days, night by night
Shailaputri
शैलपुत्री· Daughter of the mountainThe first form — Parvati as the daughter of Himavan, riding Nandi with trishul and lotus. She is the root of all, worshipped first at Ghatasthapana.
Brahmacharini
ब्रह्मचारिणी· She who practises penanceThe form of tapasya — barefoot, holding a rosary and water-pot, who won Shiva through austerity. She grants restraint, devotion and steadiness.
Chandraghanta
चंद्रघंटा· She who bears the crescent bellTen-armed, a half-moon like a bell on her brow, riding a tiger. Her sound scatters demons; she gives courage and drives away fear and sorrow.
Kushmanda
कूष्मांडा· She who created the cosmic eggThe smile that lit the void — eight-armed, seated on a lioness, she birthed the universe with a laugh. She grants health, strength and radiance.
Skandamata
स्कंदमाता· Mother of Skanda (Kartikeya)The mother, holding the infant Skanda on her lap, seated on a lion. She is worshipped for the wellbeing of children and the peace of the household.
Katyayani
कात्यायनी· Daughter of sage KatyayanaThe warrior form born of the sages' collective fire to slay Mahishasura. Fierce and golden, she removes obstacles to marriage and grants a worthy partner.
Kalaratri
कालरात्रि· The dark night (that ends time)The most fearsome form — dark as night, riding a donkey, destroyer of demons and of all fear. Called Shubhankari, the doer of good, for those who worship her.
Mahagauri
महागौरी· The radiantly fair onePurity restored — dazzling white after her penance, riding a bull, calm and forgiving. On Ashtami the kanya pujan honours girls as her living forms.
Siddhidatri
सिद्धिदात्री· Giver of perfection (siddhis)The final form, seated on a lotus, granting all attainments — even Shiva gained his siddhis from her. Navami completes the nine and prepares for Vijayadashami.
