The meaning of Sharad Navratri

Sharad Navratri is the largest of the year's four Navratris. It marks the goddess's nine-night battle with Mahishasura, won at dawn on the tenth — Vijayadashami, the day of victory. In the east these same days are Durga Puja; on the tenth Rama's victory over Ravana is burned in effigy across the north.

Each night is given to one of the nine forms of Durga, worshipped in order from Shailaputri to Siddhidatri. Barley sown at Ghatasthapana sprouts through the nine days, and Ashtami–Navami carry the kanya pujan, where young girls are fed and honoured as the living goddess.
