When is Hariyali Teej celebrated?
On the Tritiya of the Shukla Paksha of Shravana (Sawan), in the monsoon — a few days before Nag Panchami and about two weeks before Raksha Bandhan. For this year's date, see the date shown above.
How is Hariyali Teej different from Hartalika Teej?
Hariyali Teej falls in Shravana and is a light, celebratory festival of swings, green attire and mehndi. Hartalika Teej falls a month later in Bhadrapada and centres on a severe nirjala fast and a night vigil.
Who keeps the Hariyali Teej fast?
Married women, for the long life and wellbeing of their husbands; newlywed women often keep their first Teej at their mother's home, and unmarried girls may keep it praying for a good husband.
Why is green worn on Hariyali Teej?
Green is the colour of the monsoon-fed earth and of marital good fortune (saubhagya); women wear green saris, glass bangles and mehndi to mark both the season and the festival.
