The significance of Hariyali Teej
Hariyali Teej falls on the Tritiya of the Shukla Paksha of Shravana, at the height of the monsoon when the land has turned green — 'hariyali' is that greenery. It celebrates the reunion of Parvati and Shiva: after penance held across many births, it is on this day that Shiva at last accepted Parvati as his wife.
Married women keep it for the wellbeing and long life of their husbands, and newly married women often keep their first Teej at their mother's home. Unlike the severe Hartalika Teej a month later, the mood here is festive — green saris and glass bangles, mehndi, and swings slung from the trees, with women singing the Teej songs of the rains.
The worship is of Gauri and Shankar together; the sinjara — a gift of clothes, bangles and mehndi from the family — precedes the day, and the fast is completed after the evening Gauri puja.
Hariyali Teej puja vidhi
- 1Rise, bathe and wear green, and take the sankalpa of the vrat.
- 2Install idols of Gauri (Parvati) and Shiva, adorning Parvati with the solah shringar.
- 3Offer green bangles, flowers, fruit and sweets, and light a ghee lamp.
- 4Read or hear the Hariyali Teej katha of Shiva and Parvati's union.
- 5Perform the aarti, swing on the jhula and sing the Teej songs.
- 6Complete the fast after the puja.
Mantra
ॐ नमः शिवाय
Om Namah Shivaya
Salutations to Shiva — the five-syllable mantra at the heart of the Gauri-Shankar worship.
Vrat rules
- Married women traditionally keep a nirjala or phalahar fast through the day.
- Green is worn — saris, glass bangles and mehndi — the colour of the rain-fed earth and of marital good fortune.
- Swings are hung from trees and women gather to sing seasonal Teej songs.
- The sinjara — gifts from the mother's or in-laws' home — precedes the festival.
- The fast is completed after the evening Gauri-Shankar puja.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing it with Hartalika Teej — Hariyali Teej is Shravana Shukla Tritiya (monsoon), Hartalika is in Bhadrapada and far stricter (nirjala).
- Mixing it up with Kajari Teej, which comes a fortnight later in the dark half of Bhadrapada.
- Forgetting the sinjara — the gifts from family are a defining custom of the day.
- Overlooking the Parvati–Shiva reunion story that gives the fast its meaning.
The vrat katha of Hariyali Teej
Parvati, resolved to win Shiva, is said to have kept unbroken penance across many births. In the telling that Hartalika Teej also remembers, her father had promised her elsewhere; she fled with her companions into the forest and worshipped Shiva through austerity that asked for nothing but him. Pleased at last, Shiva accepted her as his wife, and their reunion is placed on the Tritiya of Shravana.
Where Hartalika Teej remembers the severity of the penance, Hariyali Teej celebrates its reward — the union itself, kept in the green abundance of the monsoon, on swings and in song.
