The significance of Govardhan Puja
Govardhan Puja falls on the Pratipada of Shukla Paksha in Kartika, the day after Diwali, and celebrates Krishna's lifting of Mount Govardhan. It is a festival of gratitude toward nature and the land — a deliberate turn away from the worship of the powerful toward the worship of what sustains.
In Braj the day is kept as Annakut, the 'mountain of food': a great array of vegetarian dishes is cooked and heaped before Krishna in the image of the hill he raised, then offered and shared. A small Govardhan is often modelled in cow dung and decorated, worshipped as the hill itself.
The cow, central to the pastoral world Krishna belonged to, is honoured on this day as well, cleaned, garlanded and fed — the festival holding together the mountain, the herd and the harvest as one debt to be acknowledged.
Govardhan Puja puja vidhi
- 1Clean the courtyard or puja space in the morning and bathe.
- 2Model a small Govardhan hill from cow dung, shaping trees, cattle and figures on it, and decorate it.
- 3Place an image of Krishna beside or upon it; some worship Krishna as Giridhari directly.
- 4Cook the Annakut — a spread of many vegetarian dishes — and heap it before the deity.
- 5Offer flowers, a lamp, incense, akshat and the Annakut bhog; circumambulate the Govardhan model.
- 6Read or recall the Govardhan katha, sing bhajans, and perform the aarti.
- 7Feed and honour the cattle, then distribute the Annakut as prasad.
Mantra
ॐ गोवर्धनधराय नमः
Om Govardhana-dharaya Namah
Salutations to the bearer of Govardhan — Krishna who lifted the hill.
Vrat rules
- There is no compulsory fast; the day is one of cooking, offering and gratitude rather than abstinence.
- A satvik Annakut of many vegetarian dishes is prepared and offered to Krishna before anyone eats.
- Cattle are bathed, garlanded, and fed well as part of the observance.
- The food offered is shared as prasad, ideally with the whole community.
- Grains and new produce of the season are included in the offering as thanks for the harvest.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating it as just 'the day after Diwali' — Govardhan Puja is its own festival of Krishna and the cow, not a continuation of Lakshmi Puja.
- Skipping the go-puja; honouring the cow and the ox is central to the day.
- Confusing the Annakut hill of food with ordinary prasad — the offering re-enacts the Govardhan feast and should not be wasted.
- Forgetting that in Gujarat this is Bestu Varas, the new year, and in the west Bali Pratipada — the customs differ.
The vrat katha of Govardhan Puja
The cowherds of Braj kept a yearly worship of Indra, the rain-god, hoping for the rains their herds and fields depended on. The young Krishna asked why they should worship a distant power that gave grudgingly, when Govardhan hill and the forest fed their cattle and gave them everything they had. He turned the village worship instead to the hill, the cows and the land.
Enraged at being passed over, Indra loosed torrential rain to drown Braj. Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan on the little finger of his left hand and held it up like an umbrella, and the whole of Braj — people and cattle — sheltered beneath it for seven days. Indra, his pride broken, relented and bowed. The festival keeps that gesture: gratitude directed at what actually sustains, rather than fear directed at what merely threatens.
