The significance of Dussehra / Vijayadashami

Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, falls on the Shukla Dashami of Ashvin, the day after Navratri ends. It marks two victories held to be the same victory: Durga's over Mahishasura, and Rama's over Ravana. Both are read as the defeat of an arrogance that could not be killed by ordinary means.

The day is one of the three and a half muhurtas of the year considered auspicious in their entirety — no separate muhurat need be calculated for beginning something on Vijayadashami. New ventures are started, children are taught their first letters, tools and vehicles and books are worshipped in ayudha puja, and warriors once worshipped their weapons.

The effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad are burned at dusk. Ravana was a scholar, a Shiva devotee and a formidable king; what is burned is not his learning but the pride that made him think Sita was his to take.

Dussehra / Vijayadashami puja vidhi

  1. 1Bathe, and if a Navratri fast was kept, complete the parana after the Navami tithi ends.
  2. 2Clean the tools, books, instruments or vehicles that are to be worshipped and arrange them together.
  3. 3Apply haldi and kumkum, offer akshat and flowers, and place a garland on them. This is ayudha puja.
  4. 4In aparahna kaal, perform Aparajita puja facing north-east: draw an eight-petalled lotus, invoke Aparajita, and ask for a victory that does not have to be defended.
  5. 5Offer shami leaves, or worship a shami tree if one is near.
  6. 6Take part in the Ravana dahan at dusk, or light a lamp at home at the same hour.
  7. 7Begin, however briefly, whatever you have been waiting for a good day to begin.

Mantra

ॐ अपराजितायै नमः

Om Aparajitayai Namah

Salutations to Aparajita, she who is never defeated.

Vrat rules

  • There is no prescribed fast on Dussehra; those who fasted through Navratri complete their parana on this day.
  • The day is entirely auspicious — an undertaking begun on it needs no separate muhurat.
  • Aparajita puja is performed in aparahna kaal, the afternoon window, facing north-east.
  • Shami leaves are exchanged as a token of victory, following the Pandavas who recovered their weapons from a shami tree.
  • Tools, instruments, vehicles and books are cleaned and worshipped rather than used on this day.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing its two meanings — in the north it marks Rama's victory over Ravana, in the east Durga's over Mahishasura; both are Vijayadashami.
  • Missing the aparahna Vijaya muhurat, the day's auspicious window for starting new work, journeys or learning.
  • Overlooking Shami puja and the exchange of Shami (apta) leaves, a core custom in the west and south.
  • Treating it as the end of festivities — for many regions Dussehra opens the run-up to Diwali, twenty days later.

The vrat katha of Dussehra / Vijayadashami

Ravana took Sita to Lanka and would not return her. Rama crossed the sea with an army of vanaras and fought him for ten days. Ravana had ten heads and each grew back as it was struck. Vibhishana, his own brother, told Rama the secret: the nectar of immortality lay in Ravana's navel. Rama's arrow found it, and the war ended.

Before the war Rama had worshipped Durga, and it is said he found the season wrong — the goddess sleeps through the southern half of the year — so he woke her early. He offered one hundred and eight blue lotuses; the goddess hid one to test him, and Rama, whose eyes were called lotus-like, reached for a knife to offer his own. She stopped his hand and gave him the victory. It is from this untimely waking that the autumn Navratri, and the Dashami that follows it, take their name of akaal bodhan.

Dussehra / Vijayadashami timeline

  1. Nine nights of Navratri

Vijayadashami is the tenth day — the culmination of the Goddess's nine-night battle with Mahishasura, or of the nine-day Ramlila.

  2. Aparahna — the Vijaya muhurat

The late-afternoon window held most auspicious for victory and for beginning any new venture; Aparajita and Shami are worshipped.

  3. The burning / the immersion

In the north, Ravana's effigy is burned at dusk; in the east, the Durga idols are carried to the water for visarjan.

  4. Shami & Ayudha puja

The Shami leaf is exchanged as gold, tools and weapons are worshipped (Ayudha Puja), and children may begin learning.

Famous places & temples

Mysuru (Mysore) Dasara

The royal Dasara of Karnataka — the illuminated palace and the Jumbo Savari, the caparisoned elephants carrying the idol of Chamundeshwari in procession.

Kullu Dussehra, Himachal

A week-long festival that begins on Vijayadashami, when the deities of the valleys gather around Lord Raghunath at Dhalpur.

Delhi & the north — Ramlila

Weeks of Ramlila end with towering effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhakarna set ablaze at dusk.

Bastar Dussehra, Chhattisgarh

One of the world's longest festivals, running some seventy-five days, rooted in local Devi worship rather than the Rama story.

Interesting facts

  • The same day carries three great traditions — the Ramlila north, Durga Puja east, and the royal Dasara of Mysore.
  • The Vijaya muhurat of Vijayadashami is one of the year's most auspicious for beginning anything, no separate reckoning needed.
  • Shami puja recalls the Pandavas, who hid their weapons in a Shami tree during their exile and reclaimed them on this day.
  • Kullu Dussehra begins when the rest of India's ends, and Bastar's runs about seventy-five days — the two most unusual Dussehras.

Common questions

Why is Dussehra considered auspicious without a muhurat?

Vijayadashami is one of the three and a half fully auspicious muhurtas of the year. Anything begun on it is held to need no separate timing, though the aparahna window is preferred for Aparajita puja.

What is ayudha puja?

The worship of one's tools, instruments, books and vehicles — whatever one earns or learns with. They are cleaned, garlanded and left unused for the day.

Why are shami leaves exchanged on Dussehra?

The Pandavas hid their weapons in a shami tree during their year of concealment and recovered them on this day. The leaves stand for weapons regained and a victory that follows patience.
