The significance of Durga Ashtami

1. 1Bathe, wear clean clothes, and worship the ghata (kalash) and the goddess installed at Ghatasthapana.
2. 2Invoke Durga as Mahishasuramardini; offer red flowers, red cloth, sindoor, akshat and incense.
3. 3Offer bhog — often kheer, halwa and puri — and recite the Durga Saptashati or the Argala Stotra.
4. 4For Sandhi Puja, keep the joining window of Ashtami and Navami; light the customary lamps and offer to Chamunda.
5. 5For Kanya Puja, invite an odd number of young girls (and traditionally a boy as Bhairava), wash their feet, and apply tilak.
6. 6Feed them the bhog — puri, chana and halwa — offer them a gift and dakshina, and touch their feet.
7. 7Perform the aarti, distribute prasad, and break the fast as observed.

Vrat rules

• Those observing the nine-day Navratri fast continue it; many who fast only in part keep Ashtami and Navami.
• Grains, onion and garlic are avoided; fruit, milk and vrat flours such as kuttu and singhara are taken.
• Some keep the fast until the Kanya Puja is complete and break it with the same food offered to the girls.
• A ghee or oil lamp (akhand jyoti, if lit at Ghatasthapana) is kept burning.
• The fast is broken after the day's puja, or maintained into Navami by those completing the full Navratri.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Missing the Sandhi Puja — its 48-minute window across the Ashtami–Navami juncture is fixed by the tithi, not the clock, and is the day's holiest moment.
• Treating kanya pujan as a mere meal — the girls are worshipped first, their feet washed, before being fed.
• Confusing Maha Ashtami's Kumari Puja (one girl as the goddess) with the kanya pujan of many girls; both are kept.
• Assuming Ashtami is always the fasting day — traditions vary between Ashtami and Navami for the kanya bhoj and vrat parana.

1. Morning — maha-snan & anjali

   The Devi is bathed and adorned; devotees offer the pushpanjali, flowers presented with mantras to Mahagauri, the eighth form.

2. Ashtami puja & havan

   The main Ashtami worship and, in many homes, a havan; weapons and the goddess's implements are honoured.

3. Sandhi Puja

   At the juncture of Ashtami and Navami — the last 24 minutes of one and the first 24 of the other — the fierce Chamunda is worshipped with 108 lamps.

4. Kumari / Kanya Puja

   Young girls are worshipped as living forms of the goddess, their feet washed, then fed and given gifts.
