The significance of Holi
Holi is two festivals on consecutive days. On the Purnima of Phalguna, Holika Dahan is performed in the evening — a bonfire lit at pradosh, after Bhadra has passed, in which the old year's accumulation is burned. The next morning is Rangwali Holi, the play of colour.
The fire commemorates Prahlada, whose devotion survived it. The colour commemorates Krishna, who complained to Yashoda that Radha was fair and he was dark, and was told to go and colour her face however he liked. What began as a child's grievance became the one day when the ordinary rules of distance, rank and decorum are suspended.
Holika Dahan must not be performed while Bhadra is running, and never while Purnima has not yet begun. Where Bhadra occupies the whole of the pradosh window, the dahan is deferred to the late-night period after it ends.
Holi puja vidhi
- 1Days before, gather wood and dried cow dung cakes at the chosen spot and raise the pyre.
- 2Place an effigy of Holika with Prahlada on her lap, made of dung cakes, at its centre.
- 3At pradosh kaal, once Bhadra has ended, offer water, roli, akshat, flowers, haldi, gulal and a raw thread wound around the pyre.
- 4Light the fire and circumambulate it three, five or seven times, offering grain and coconut.
- 5Roast fresh barley and gram in the flames and eat them as prasad; take a little ash home.
- 6The next morning, apply the ash to the forehead, then begin with gulal — dry colour first, on the feet of elders.
- 7Visit, forgive, and settle what was left unsettled. The day is understood to close old quarrels rather than continue them.
Mantra
ॐ ह्रीं होलिकायै नमः
Om Hreem Holikayai Namah
Invoked at the dahan, as what is spent is given to the fire.
Vrat rules
- No fast is prescribed. The observance is the dahan on the first evening and the colour on the second morning.
- Holika Dahan is performed at pradosh kaal, only after Bhadra has ended and after Purnima has begun.
- Circumambulate the pyre an odd number of times — three, five or seven — offering grain to the fire.
- New harvest grain, particularly barley and gram, is roasted in the fire and eaten as prasad.
- Ash from the bonfire is applied to the forehead the next morning, before the colours begin.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using synthetic chemical colours — they harm skin and eyes; herbal or tesu-flower colours are the older, safer way.
- Forcing colour on people, children or animals who don't wish to play — 'bura na mano' is an invitation, not a compulsion.
- Wasting large volumes of water; traditional Holi is mostly dry gulal.
- Adding bhang to thandai without care or consent, and giving it to those who shouldn't have it.
- Playing roughly with egg, grease or mud, which turns a festival of goodwill into harm.
The vrat katha of Holi
Hiranyakashipu had a boon that made him almost unkillable, and he demanded to be worshipped as god. His own son Prahlada would not, and went on saying the name of Vishnu. The father tried poison, elephants and serpents, and the boy lived. Finally he called his sister Holika, who had a shawl that fire could not burn, and told her to sit in a pyre with the child on her lap.
The shawl lifted from her shoulders and settled on Prahlada. Holika burned; the boy walked out. The boon she had been given had a condition she had forgotten — it held only when she entered the fire alone. That night is the dahan. What is burned, in the telling, is not a woman but the belief that protection granted for oneself will hold when it is used against another.
Holi timeline
- Purnima eve — Holika Dahan
The bonfire is lit at the pradosh muhurat, burning Holika and the year's ill; new grain is roasted in the flames.
- Next morning — colours begin
Rangwali Holi (Dhuleti): dry gulal and coloured water are played, doors open to all, differences set aside.
- Midday
The play peaks; thandai, gujiya and sweets are shared, and music and dance fill the streets.
- Evening — cleaning & greetings
People bathe, dress afresh and visit elders and neighbours to embrace and exchange sweets.
Famous places & temples
Barsana & Nandgaon (Braj)
The famous Lathmar Holi, where the women of Barsana playfully drive back the men of Nandgaon with sticks, days before the rest of India plays.
Vrindavan & Mathura
Krishna's own land — the phoolon-wali Holi of flowers at Banke Bihari, and the moving widows' Holi at Gopinath temple that breaks an old taboo.
Shantiniketan, Bengal
Basanta Utsav, the spring festival Tagore shaped — students in yellow, song and dance rather than wet colour.
Anandpur Sahib, Punjab
Hola Mohalla, the Sikh martial festival beside Holi, with Nihang displays of horsemanship and arms.
Interesting facts
- ◆In Braj, Holi runs almost sixteen days — beginning at Barsana long before the one-day Holi elsewhere.
- ◆The widows of Vrindavan now play Holi at the Gopinath temple, overturning a centuries-old social taboo.
- ◆Hola Mohalla at Anandpur Sahib turns the season into a Sikh festival of martial display, begun by Guru Gobind Singh.
- ◆Tagore reimagined Holi as Basanta Utsav at Shantiniketan — a graceful festival of song rather than wet colour.
- ◆The traditional colours came from nature — tesu (flame-of-the-forest) flowers, turmeric, beetroot and neem.
Common questions
Why must Holika Dahan avoid Bhadra?
Bhadra (the Vishti karana) is held to spoil auspicious fire rites. The dahan is performed in pradosh kaal only after Bhadra has ended; if Bhadra covers the whole evening, it is deferred to the night.
Is Holi celebrated on one day or two?
Two. Holika Dahan is on the evening of Phalguna Purnima; Rangwali Holi, the colour, is the following morning on Chaitra Krishna Pratipada.
What is done with the ash from the bonfire?
It is applied to the forehead the next morning before the colours begin, as a mark that what was spent has been surrendered to the fire.
