When Devshayani Ekadashi falls

The significance of Devshayani Ekadashi

Devshayani Ekadashi, on the Shukla Ekadashi of Ashadha, is the day Vishnu lies down to sleep — the beginning of Chaturmas, the four sacred months of the monsoon. From this day until Devutthana Ekadashi in Kartika, when he wakes, auspicious works are paused: no weddings, no housewarmings, no new ventures, for the time is given over to inwardness and vows.

It is also called Hari Shayani or Padma Ekadashi, and in Maharashtra it is Ashadhi Ekadashi — the day the great Wari pilgrimage reaches Pandharpur and the god Vitthal. Where the rest of the tradition sees Vishnu withdraw, the Warkaris see him waiting at the temple door for the walking pilgrims who have come to him for centuries.

So the day turns a hinge: the god sleeps, the world grows quiet, and the devout take up a Chaturmas discipline — a fast, a silence, a study — to keep through the rains until he wakes.

Mythology & origins

In the Vamana story, Vishnu as the dwarf took three strides to reclaim the worlds from the generous demon-king Bali, then granted Bali the netherworld and promised to abide with him. It is told that through Chaturmas Vishnu keeps that promise, resting in Bali's realm — and so sleeps to the world above. In the Padma Ekadashi katha it is on this Ashadha Ekadashi that his yoga-nidra begins.

Historical background

The Chaturmas of monsoon retreat is very old — it was, for wandering ascetics and the Buddhist and Jain orders alike, the season to stay in one place while the rains made the roads impassable and the earth teemed with life not to be trodden. Around that practical retreat grew the vows of Chaturmas and the marking of its start and end by the two Ekadashis. In Maharashtra the day gathered a further history: the Warkari sampradaya's Wari, the centuries-old foot-pilgrimage carrying the palkhis of Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram to Pandharpur, culminates here.

Scriptural references

The Padma Ekadashi mahatmya is told in the Bhavishyottara Purana, in a dialogue where Krishna recounts to Yudhishthira the vow's origin and merit; the Brahma Vaivarta and other Puranas describe Vishnu's Chaturmas sleep. The rules of the Chaturmas vows — what to give up in each month — are set out in the dharma-nibandhas.

Seasonal & scientific significance

The four months from Devshayani to Devutthana are the monsoon and its aftermath, when travel was hard, the digestive fire weak and infection easy. Pausing weddings and journeys, keeping lighter food and a settled routine, and turning to study and vows made sound sense in that season — the 'sleep' of the world matching the body's own quieter months. The Chaturmas food restrictions, month by month, track exactly the produce best avoided as the rains progress.

Devshayani Ekadashi puja vidhi

  1. 1Bathe early and take the Ekadashi sankalp, along with the Chaturmas vow, before Vishnu.
  2. 2Worship Vishnu in his reclining form with tulsi, chandan, yellow flowers and a lamp.
  3. 3Prepare a symbolic bed for the Lord and, with the shayan mantra, lay him to rest for the four months.
  4. 4Offer panchamrit and a bhog of kheer; recite the Vishnu Sahasranama.
  5. 5Declare the discipline you will keep through Chaturmas — a food, a habit, a japa.
  6. 6Keep the fast and break it at the Dwadashi parana; Warkaris complete the Wari at Pandharpur.

Puja samagri — what to gather

  • An image of Vishnu, ideally reclining (Shesha-shayi), for the shayan worship
  • Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, chandan, dhoop and a ghee lamp
  • Panchamrit and a bhog of kheer or makhan-mishri
  • A bed or cloth symbolically prepared for the sleeping Lord
  • Items for the Chaturmas sankalp — the vow one takes up for the four months

Mantra

सुप्ते त्वयि जगन्नाथ जगत् सुप्तं भवेदिदम् · ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय

Supte tvayi Jagannatha jagat suptam bhavedidam · Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya

When you sleep, O Lord of the world, this world too sleeps. Salutations to Vasudeva.

Vrat rules

  • The Ekadashi fast is kept — no grains — in Vishnu's name.
  • Vishnu is worshipped in his reclining form and symbolically laid to rest for Chaturmas.
  • A Chaturmas vow is taken from this day — a food given up, a japa, a study or a service kept through the four months.
  • Weddings and other auspicious new works are not begun until Devutthana Ekadashi.
  • The fast is broken at the Dwadashi parana; in Maharashtra the day is the culmination of the Pandharpur Wari.

Vrat food — what to eat and avoid

Allowed

  • Phalahar — fruit, milk, makhana — as on every Ekadashi
  • Sabudana, kuttu and singhara with rock salt for those fasting
  • From this day, the lighter satvik Chaturmas diet is begun by many

Avoided

  • Grains, rice and beans on the Ekadashi itself
  • The Chaturmas vow often gives up specific foods month by month — leafy greens in Shravana, curd in Bhadrapada, milk in Ashwina, pulses in Kartika

The vrat katha of Devshayani Ekadashi

In the Padma Purana's telling, King Mandhata ruled justly, yet his kingdom fell under a drought that lasted three years, and his people starved. Finding no fault in his own rule, the king sought out the sage Angira, who told him the cause lay in a subtle imbalance of the age and gave him a remedy: let the king and his people keep the Padma (Devshayani) Ekadashi of Ashadha with full faith.

The king returned and kept the vow with all his subjects. The rains came, the land revived, and the people were fed. So the Ekadashi that opens Vishnu's Chaturmas sleep is kept for the grace it carries — and, in the Deccan, it is the day the Warkaris, singing the abhangas of Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram, walk the last miles to Pandharpur to stand before Vitthal, who waits with hands on his hips at the temple door.

How it differs by region

Maharashtra (Ashadhi Ekadashi)

North India

Kept as Devshayani/Hari Shayani Ekadashi: Vishnu is laid to rest, the Chaturmas vow is taken, and the wedding season closes until Kartika.

Vaishnava & ISKCON

Observed as Shayana Ekadashi with Vishnu worship, fasting, and the beginning of Chaturmas disciplines.

Common questions

When is Devshayani Ekadashi?

On the Shukla Ekadashi of Ashadha, usually in June–July, at the onset of the monsoon. It begins Chaturmas, the four sacred months, ending on Devutthana Ekadashi in Kartika. This year's date is shown above.

Why do weddings stop after Devshayani Ekadashi?

From this day Vishnu is held to sleep through Chaturmas, and auspicious new works — weddings, housewarmings, sacred-thread ceremonies — are paused until he wakes on Devutthana Ekadashi in Kartika, about four months later.

What is a Chaturmas vow?

A discipline taken up from Devshayani Ekadashi and kept through the four months — giving up a particular food, keeping a daily japa or study, or a service. Traditional lists give up leafy greens, curd, milk and pulses in successive months.

What is Ashadhi Ekadashi in Maharashtra?

The same day. It is the culmination of the Pandharpur Wari, when lakhs of Warkaris walk to Pandharpur carrying the palkhis of the saints Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram, to stand before the god Vitthal.
