The significance of Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan falls on the Purnima of Shravana. A sister ties a thread on her brother's wrist; he gives her a gift and, in the older understanding, an undertaking of protection. The thread is the whole rite — the raksha sutra, a bond that binds the one who ties it and the one who wears it equally.
The older texts do not restrict the thread to siblings. It was tied by priests on patrons, by wives on husbands, by anyone on anyone whose protection was sought or offered. What survives in common practice is the sibling form.
The rakhi must not be tied during Bhadra. Because Shravana Purnima frequently begins with Bhadra running, the muhurat often opens only in the afternoon — the aparahna window is traditionally preferred, and pradosh is acceptable when aparahna is unavailable.
Mythology & origins
Two older legends sit behind the sibling rite. Yamuna tied a thread on her brother Yama, the lord of death; moved by it, he declared that whoever is bound by a sister's thread would become deathless — and so the thread came to mean protection from the worst thing there is. In the second, Lakshmi ties a rakhi on the demon-king Bali to whom Vishnu had bound himself as a doorkeeper; the thread makes Bali her brother, and a brother cannot refuse a sister's wish, so she asks for Vishnu back. The famous raksha-sutra mantra — 'by that thread which bound the mighty Bali' — remembers exactly this.
Seasonal & scientific significance
Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravana Purnima, at the height of the monsoon, when rivers are full and disease spreads easily — a season when a token of care and a check on one another had real weight. The same full moon is Shravani / Upakarma, when the twice-born change the sacred thread and begin a fresh cycle of study, and Narali Purnima on the west coast, when fishing communities read the calming of the monsoon winds and return to the sea. The thread itself — cotton dyed in turmeric — carries the old antiseptic association of haldi.
Spiritual significance
The raksha sutra protects not by force but by obligation. A wall can be breached; a promise freely given is harder to break. In tying it the sister does not command protection — she places the brother under a bond he takes on willingly, and the binding falls equally on the one who ties and the one who wears. It is dharma made visible as a single thread: a relationship held not by blood alone but by a duty each accepts.
Raksha Bandhan puja vidhi
- 1Both bathe and wear fresh clothes. Wait until Bhadra has ended before beginning.
- 2Prepare a thali with roli, akshat, a lamp, sweets and the rakhi.
- 3Seat the brother facing east; the sister stands facing west.
- 4Perform aarti, apply a tilak of roli and press akshat onto it — the rice should stay, which is taken as the blessing settling.
- 5Tie the rakhi on the right wrist, reciting the raksha sutra mantra.
- 6Feed him a sweet, and let him give a gift in return along with the promise of protection.
- 7Touch the feet of elders present, and eat together.
Puja samagri — what to gather
- A puja thali
- Roli / kumkum
- Akshat (unbroken rice)
- A diya and ghee
- The rakhi / raksha sutra
- Chandan (sandal paste)
- Sweets (mithai)
- A whole coconut
- Incense
- A small gift for the sister
Mantra
येन बद्धो बली राजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः। तेन त्वामनुबध्नामि रक्षे मा चल मा चल॥
Yena baddho bali raja danavendro mahabalah, tena tvam anubadhnami rakshe ma chala ma chala
By that same thread which bound Bali, the mighty king of the danavas, I bind you — O protection, do not waver, do not waver.
Vrat rules
- No fast is prescribed, though some sisters eat only after the rakhi has been tied.
- The rakhi is never tied during Bhadra; wait for it to end, even if that means the afternoon or evening.
- Aparahna kaal is the preferred window; pradosh kaal is the accepted alternative.
- The brother faces east and the sister faces west while the thread is tied.
- The thread is worn until it falls away on its own, or until Janmashtami, and is not cut off.
Vrat food — what to eat and avoid
Allowed
- Ghewar and feni (the North-Indian sweets of the day)
- Coconut sweets and narali bhaat (coconut rice)
- Kheer and homemade mithai
- A festive vegetarian thali eaten together
Avoided
- Some sisters eat only after the rakhi is tied
- Many families keep the day vegetarian / sattvic
- Onion and garlic are avoided in observant households
The vrat katha of Raksha Bandhan
When Krishna cut his finger on the Sudarshana chakra, Draupadi tore a strip from her sari and bound the wound without a word. Krishna told her the debt would be repaid. Years later, when she was dragged into the Kaurava court and her sari pulled, it did not end — the cloth ran on and on, and she was not shamed. A strip of cloth given freely had returned as cloth without end.
Another telling: Indra, losing to the asuras, was given a thread by his wife Sachi, consecrated with her austerity and tied on his wrist. He went back and won. In the oldest sense the raksha sutra protects not by force but by obligation — it places the one who wears it under a promise, and a promise is harder to break than a wall.
How it differs by region
North & Central India
The sibling rakhi in its most familiar form — thali, tilak, thread and ghewar, with the brother's gift and promise of protection.
Maharashtra & the Konkan coast
Narali Purnima: fishing communities offer coconuts to the sea as the monsoon winds calm and the boats go out again.
South India
Avani Avittam / Upakarma — Brahmins ritually change the sacred thread (yajnopavita) and renew their Vedic study on this Purnima.
West Bengal
Jhulan Purnima, and the Rakhi bond of unity that Tagore turned into a public act against the 1905 partition of Bengal.
Common questions
Can a rakhi be tied during Bhadra?
No. Bhadra is avoided for the rite entirely. Because Shravana Purnima often begins with Bhadra running, the muhurat frequently opens only in the afternoon — aparahna is preferred, pradosh is the fallback.
On which wrist is the rakhi tied?
The right wrist, with the brother seated facing east and the sister facing west.
Is Raksha Bandhan only for brothers and sisters?
In practice, mostly. The older texts describe the raksha sutra as tied by priests on patrons and by wives on husbands — anyone offering or seeking protection.
Festival days follow the classical attribution rules — udaya (sunrise), pradosha (evening), nishita (midnight), madhyahna or aparahna vyapini as each festival prescribes — computed for Kashi/Varanasi (IST). Regional observance can differ by a day in some years.
