• Waiting for a special muhurat — Vasant Panchami is an abujh muhurat, auspicious in its entirety, needing no separate reckoning.
• Reducing it to a spring/kite festival and skipping the Saraswati Puja and the beginning of learning.
• Using the books or instruments placed before Saraswati that day; they are set aside in her honour.
• Missing the chance to start a child's education, or any new study or art, on one of the year's most fitting days.

1. Pre-dawn & yellow

   The day begins with a bath and yellow clothes — the colour of mustard fields, spring and Saraswati herself.

2. Morning — Saraswati Puja

   Saraswati is worshipped with yellow flowers, and books, instruments and pens are placed at her feet, set aside from use that day.

3. Vidya-arambha / akshar-abhyasa

   Children are given their first letters, and new learning, music and art are begun — the whole day is an auspicious muhurat.

4. Afternoon — kites & preparation

   In the north the sky fills with kites; in Braj and elsewhere the ground is laid for Holika, forty days ahead of Holi.
